Lady Audley's Secret is a Victorian novel which includes all decisive elements to keep you in suspense - murder, arson, blackmail, bigamy and a forbidden romance . The story is fast-paced and the main character, Lady Audley, is a refreshingly scheming and resourceful villainess filled with passion and needs that threatened the male dominated Victorian era.

In narrating this audiobook, Kim Hicks handles the formal prose and excessive detail capably, making it seem manageable to all. This Victorian mystery was first published in 1862. When George Tallboys returns to England from making his fortune in Australia, he discovers that his beloved wife has just died. When Tallboys disappears, his best friend, Robert Audley, determines to hunt down the truth, no matter how dangerous that may be. The one drawback to Hicks's mostly effective performance is that it often becomes difficult to distinguish among the voices of the various characters, both men and women. However, for the most part, Hicks's performance expressively reflects the story. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine
