      The universal emotion, love, is celebrated throughout history and cultures in this slender and somewhat slight volume. More than 80 couples, from Nefertari and Ramses II to Michelle and Barack Obama, are given a brief biographical treatment that leaves the major facts of their lives behind but focuses instead on a specific romance. Some, like Abelard and H�lo�se or Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning, have a full four pages of coverage; but many, like Lorena Hickok and Eleanor Roosevelt or Chinua Achebe and Christie Okoli-Achebe, are given two or three paragraphs. Lovers of all sorts are covered: married partners, illicit lovers, same-sex couples, and transgender loves. Some relationships are tragic; some led to long-term happiness. Many entries feature an illustration--a photograph or reproduction of a piece of art--and nicely done line drawings enhance the text elsewhere. There is a proper index, and credits for the illustrations end the book. This is one to read cover to cover or dip into randomly, best suited to a public library's circulating collection.
