"Utterly charming... A Proposal They Can't Refuse is a surefire winner!" —Mia Sosa, USA Today bestselling author of The Worst Best Man
Natalie Caña turns up the heat, humor and heart in this debut rom-com about a Puerto Rican chef and an Irish American whiskey distiller forced into a fake engagement by their scheming octogenarian grandfathers.
Kamilah Vega is desperate to convince her family to update their Puerto Rican restaurant and enter it into the Fall Foodie Tour. With the gentrification of their Chicago neighborhood, it's the only way to save the place. The fly in her mofongo—her blackmailing abuelo says if she wants to change anything in his restaurant, she'll have to marry the one man she can't stand: his best friend's grandson.
Liam Kane spent a decade working to turn his family's distillery into a contender. But just as he and his grandfather are on the verge of winning a national competition, Granda hits him with a one-two punch: he has cancer and has his heart set on seeing Liam married before it's too late. And Granda knows just the girl...Kamilah Vega.
If they refuse, their grandfathers will sell the building that houses both their businesses. With their futures on the line, Kamilah and Liam plan to outfox the devious duo, faking an engagement until they both get what they want. But soon, they find themselves tangled up in more than either of them bargained for.

Valentina Ortiz narrates a rom-com set in the Chicago food scene. When their respective grandfathers hatch an outrageous plot to get them together, Kamilah Vega and Liam Kane have to fake a relationship. Ortiz's performance is outstanding; she smoothly channels Kamilah's insecurities about her place within her family, as well as her ambivalent feelings for Liam. Liam has unresolved emotional trauma, which Ortiz portrays with compassion and nuance, but he also cares profoundly for his family and friends. In her performance of the two grandfathers, one Puerto Rican and one Irish, Ortiz truly shines. Both are rascals and give the story its soul. Ortiz balances the humorous and emotional aspects of this story, making it deeply affecting listening. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine

Third-generation Puerto Rican chef Kamilah Vega lives and breathes her family's restaurant. It's barely breaking even, but with her grandfather's help, Kamilah thinks she could renovate it. Meanwhile, neighbor Liam Kane is trying to bring his family's distillery up to highest level. He and his grandfather have worked for the past decade on perfecting their craft, but now Granda is dying of cancer. The two grandfathers plot to bring their grandchildren together, and they aren't above using emotional blackmail to do it. They are right to try, since Kamilah and Liam fit together. Kamilah's natural buoyancy is tempered by Liam's self-consciousness, and his introspection is leveled out by her love of spreading joy through food. Valentina Ortiz is vibrant in her accented performance as Kamilah, a woman making her dreams come true. Her voicing of Liam is more circumspect, imbuing his voice with appropriate steadiness. Listeners will also appreciate the delightful Irish lilt that she brings to Liam's grandfather's voice. Ortiz brings Caa's charming debut alive and lets the humor and heat between the characters shine through. VERDICT This sweet, funny, hot, and poignant story hits all the right notes. Libraries should purchase.--Jodi L. Israel

Childhood best friends Kamilah Vega and Liam Kane grew up in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood where their grandparents started their businesses. Kamilah's abuelo opened a traditional Puerto Rican restaurant, El Coqu, in the same building that Liam's Granda opened Kane Distillery, where they make traditional Irish whiskey. Decades later, gentrification is turning their old neighborhood into a hipster enclave, and lonely workaholics Kamilah and Liam have grown apart. But the sneaky old matchmakers have a plan. In exchange for their permission to update their businesses and let their grandkids take the lead, Kamilah and Liam must get engaged. Their fake arrangement has a rocky start, but as they spend more time together, Liam and Kamilah recognize that they understand each other better than anyone else and will do anything to support each other's hopes and dreams. With beautiful references to Puerto Rican and Irish folklore, the cultural and linguistic nuances Caa inserts into her heartwarming contemporary romance are flawless, as is the slow buildup of romantic feelings. This spectacular debut has tremendous series potential and is highly recommended for all libraries, especially those looking to highlight authors who deliver diverse true-to-life characters that leap off the page with originality and heart.
