The Hollywood icon tells about his rise to Hollywood stardom among legends like Cary Grant and Barbara Stanwyck and his troubled marriage, divorce, and remarriage to starlet Natalie Wood.

In the revelation-filled memoir from one of Hollywood's most talented actors, readers have a candid and deeply personal look at the life and career of Robert Wagner.

Wagner's long career began in the Hollywood of the 1950s, when studios were dominant and even the love lives of actors were dictated by what benefited the studio. His memoirs will chronicle in a very personal way his rise to stardom, his decline, and his resurrection. Wagner will talk candidly about his famous relationship with Natalie Wood and the circumstances surrounding her tragic death. His friendships and stories include major Hollywood personalities in the last half of the 20th century.

When his family moved to Los Angeles, a young Wagner held a variety of jobs (including one as a caddy for Clark Gable) while pursuing his goal, but it was while dining with his parents at a restaurant in Beverly Hills that he was “discovered” by a talent scout.

Known as much for his on-screen abilities as his off-screen personal heartbreak, Wagner will discuss for the first time his complicated and ultimately tragic relationship with Hollywood sweetheart Natalie Wood. It was implied that Wagner played a role in Natalie Wood's tragic drowning off the coast of Catalina Island in 1981 and Wagner, for the first time ever, will set the record straight.

With at least two dozen photos to illustrate his real Hollywood-style tell-all, this will be the extremely candid autobiography of Robert Wagner.

Actor and producer Wagner begins this engaging memoir by recalling his childhood fascination with movies and the Hollywood community. Determined to become a part of that world, in 1942, at age 12, he worked as a golf caddy, struggling to make contact with those who could help him. As an 18-year-old Fox contract player, he got a foothold with minor roles: “I wasn't very good in this period, but I was diligent.” Soon he scored with Prince Valiant
in 1954, and A Kiss Before Dying
, thus beginning a six-decade career in theater, television series and more than 100 movies. His rule of thumb: “Find smart people and listen to them.” Along the way, he realized friends and family were equally as important as show business, and he writes with fondness and humor about his close friendships with David Niven and others while painting a backdrop of Hollywood in transition. As for the women in Wagner's life, he details one-night stands, his four-year affair with Barbara Stanwyck (who was twice his age) and his four marriages (twice to Natalie Wood). His love for Wood threads throughout, and his memory of her last night is chilling as he leads the reader step-by-step through her 1981 disappearance from their boat and the search for her body.

Wagner, who moved smoothly from films (A Kiss Before Dying
      ; The
      Pink Panther
) to TV (It Takes a Thief
      ; Hart to Hart
), discusses his life, career and four marriages in this dishy tell-all. His strong performance makes the audio a standout among Hollywood memoirs. His voice reveals a great emotional range: the anger he nursed for his remote and critical father; his joy at the births of his daughters; his frustration at some Hollywood insiders' pettiness. At times his voice dips into an intimate tone just above a whisper, such as when describing his first love tryst with Barbara Stanwyck in the early 1950s (he was 22, she was 46) or narrating his devastation after the accidental drowning of wife Natalie Wood in 1981. The final disc features 24 pages of personal photos, which add a good deal to the overall package and should be standard issue with all audio celebrity memoirs. A Harper Entertainment hardcover (Reviews, Aug. 11).
