Perhaps they met in Kerala chief minister PINARAYI VIJAYAN, 77, because he answers to both descriptions. For one, the state logged 12.1 per cent GSDP in 2021-22, nearly double the national GDP. And for the BJP, long plotting a southern takeover, he is the one monolith that stands in its way. In his second consecutive term now, he may be a bit battle-scarred but the CPI(M)’s stern helmsman is unperturbed. “I don’t care for history’s verdict, let the people of Kerala judge,” he says. Excerpts from an interview with JEEMON JACOB:

UTTAR PRADESH: AHEAD OF ALL EXPECTATIONS • In this era of Azadi ka Amrit Kaai, the Yogi government’s first budget focused on making the state a one trillion dollar economy in the coming years for the development of state. The 2023-24 budget is historic in many ways. This is the Yogi government’s sixth continuous budget and the second budget of his second term. It is also the biggest budget in the history of the state, to the tune of Rs 6,90,242 crore which, according to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will propel the economic growth of the state. The Yogi government kept in mind the welfare of all classes, including the poor, old age citizens, divyang, women and farmers. It has special focus on improved infrastructure and development, keeping in mind the heavy volume of investment which is going to come to the state after the Global Investor Summit 2023. Every citizen of the society has been kept at the centre of the budget.

Not only the steps have been taken for the education and employment of the youth In this budget but there are also efforts to make them self reliant. For this purpose there are measures for the encouragement of startups.

LAW AND ORDER OF UP BECAME THE BENCHMARK • A total of Rs 17 crore 96 lakhs has been given as ex-gratia payment to the families of 73 people who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty while working for the UP police department or were part of the central paramilitary or paramedical forces or in the Indian Army.

CRACKDOWN ON CRIMES

EASY AND SIMPLE JUSTICE SYSTEM • The Yogi government is determined to provide justice in an easy and simple manner to the normal public. The government has also given attention to the justice system in its recent budget.
