ROOFTOP STALEMATE • The military stand-off between India and China in Ladakh began in April 2020. THE RUPEE BIG FALL …AND ITS FALLOUT

THE FALL AND FALL OF THE INR • THE RUPEE HAS BEEN UNDER IMMENSE PRESSURE SINCE RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE IN FEBRUARY 2022. SINCE THEN, IT HAS LOST 6.9 PER CENT IN VALUE. FROM HOVERING BETWEEN 75 AND 77, IT BREACHED THE CRUCIAL RS 80/$ MARK FOR THE FIRST TIME ON JULY 19

THE MACRO VIEW • INDIA IS SPENDING ITS BUFFER FOREX RESER VES TO PROTECT THE RUPEE EVEN AS FOREIGN INVESTORS FLEE INDIA FOR THE US WHERE THE FED HAS HIKED RATES. INDIA FACES HEADWINDS FROM A NEGATIVE TRADE BALANCE TOO

A MIXED BAG • THE VARIOUS SECTORS THAT BENEFIT OR SUFFER ON ACCOUNT OF THE RUPEE'S DECLINE

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME? • A WEAKENED CURRENCY CAN, AMONG OTHER THINGS, BE INFLATIONARY, MAKE FOREIGN TRAVEL EXPENSIVE AND ADD TO THE COSTS OF OVERSEAS EDUCATION

ARRESTING THE FALL • With the rupee on a slippery slope, the weak currency is causing more pain than gain. The Board of India Today Experts prescribes a slew of measures to prevent further devaluation of the rupee and keep the country’s growth momentum going

HALF A SKY FALLING • A World Economic Forum survey on gender gaps confirms the NFHS findings. India has miserably failed one half of its people: the women

Indian Women: Empowered but in poor health • The gender gap in India, shown in the WEF report, was also visible in the National Family Health Survey report published earlier this year. This report revealed how women fared poorly in health indicators while showing improvement in other indicators. In fact, anaemia and obesity have increased among them in the last five years. What’s more worrying is the regional disparity among states in terms of performance across all indicators.

More women in political leadership • The share of women in Parliament and the assemblies has been gradually increasing since 2000. Their participation in the electoral process has also seen a spike. Not surprisingly, India has earned a respectable 48th position in the Global Gender Gap Index in this category

YOGI’S HIGHWAYS OF PROGRESS • The quick spread of a network of expressways through Uttar Pradesh shows the importance these bringers of development have for the BJP state government

INVITING ALL WHEELS • UP’S MESH OF EXPRESSWAYS

HOW TO KICK THE BUTT • New research and cessation techniques as well as a committed cessation cadre promise to help wean smokers off the habit more permanently, and in the bargain reduce the burden of tobacco-related disease in the country

WHY INDIA NEEDS CESSATION...
