Davina Porter uses her lilting, very British accent to generate excitement and drama in her reading of this Victorian mystery featuring the charming Charlotte Pitt and her husband, Thomas. Charlotte's mother, Caroline, has lost a gold locket, and the Pitts become involved when one of her friends is poisoned. Are the petty thefts and murder related? Porter's sensitive and thoughtful portrayal of the many female characters, both high-born and working-class, is superb. She uses distinctive voices and accents to identify each member of the diverse cast of characters. The story's puzzling, sad denouement is striking, and Porter's wonderful presentation makes Perry's story engrossing. S.C.A. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine
