Ito is one of manga's most prolific and exalted creators, and this memoir and analysis of his own work is both an essential supplement to his catalog of works and a fascinating introspection into his creative mind. Ito discusses in depth his personal history, from the details of his upbringing to his artistic influences, such as mangaka Kazuo Umezz and tokusatsu, live-action television programs and movies that use practical special effects. In addition, Ito talks at length about his stories, especially the ones that have garnered him critical acclaim, and his character-creation process. Of particular interest to many will be the discussion of Ito's creative process, including how he crafts tales of terror in both the storytelling and artwork. Stylishly rendered, compulsively readable, and absolutely essential, this is a work that manga readers will devour. Containing illustrations from the original works and concept sketches, this work does contain graphic imagery and body horror, which Ito is well-known for. The layers of process are a feast for the eyes, and Ito truly takes his readers on a journey in this revealing portrait.
