From the queen of Regency romance comes a heartwarming new story.
Lady Jennifer Arden and Ben Ellis know that a match between them is out of the question. Yet their hearts yearn for the impossible.
Left unable to walk by a childhood illness, Lady Jennifer, sister of the Duke of Wilby, has grown up to make a happy place for herself in society. Outgoing and cheerful, she has many friends and enjoys the pleasures of the Season—even if she cannot dance at balls or stroll in Hyde Park. She is blessed with a large, loving, and protective family. But she secretly dreams of marriage and children, and of walking—and dancing.
When Ben Ellis comes across Lady Jennifer as she struggles to walk with the aid of primitive crutches, he instantly understands her yearning. He is a fixer. It is often said of him that he never saw a practical problem he did not have to solve. He wants to help her discover independence and motion—driving a carriage,
swimming, even walking a different way. But he must be careful. He is the bastard son of the late Earl of Stratton. Though he was raised with the earl's family, he knows he does not really belong in the world of the ton.
Jennifer is shocked—and intrigued—by Ben's ideas, and both families are alarmed by the growing friendship and perhaps more that they sense developing between the two. A duke's sister certainly cannot marry the bastard son of an earl. Except sometimes love can find a way.

Bestseller Balogh again demonstrates her skill for writing nuanced individuals who find fulfillment as a couple in her satisfying third Ravenswood historical romance (after Remember Me). The extended Ware family congregates in Hampshire to enjoy a summer fete, among them Ben Ellis, bastard son of the late Lord Stratton, who arrives with his three-year-old daughter in tow. Though brought up with the Wares, Ben has always been cognizant of his lower status. When he meets Lady Jennifer Arden, sister to the Duke of Wilby, who has been unable to walk since she was a girl, he finds she is the only person in the busy household he can confide in about his late wife and disgraced mother. In turn, Jennifer reveals her frustration at not being able to get around easily, spurring the ever-inventive Ben to create improved mobility devices for her. Both families discourage their growing connection, citing his low birth and her disability, but the opinions of outsiders can’t stop attraction from blossoming. Balogh’s talent lies in her adroit characterizations, allowing her protagonists to grow and change as a result of their relationship. The intense and intimate conversations between the leads make the depth of their connection clear while a gossipy village provides the perfect backdrop for their tender romance. Balogh’s fans will not be disappointed.

Narrator Rosalyn Landor breathes life into the romance between Ben Ellis and Lady Jennifer Arden in England circa 1800. Ben is the bastard son of an earl, and Jennifer is the sister of a duke. Due to a childhood illness, Jennifer is unable to walk, but she is happy and loving nonetheless. Ben and Jennifer encounter each other at a family house party. Landor successfully navigates multiple characters, allowing the listener to easily follow along. She is especially good at voicing Ben's young daughter, Joy, giving her just the right touch of childlike exuberance. Jennifer and Ben long for each other but fear society's disapproval of Ben's background, and Landor exudes all of their angst. Listeners will enjoy Landor's lyrical performance.
