This adorable outing by crocheter Bergstrom (Mini Crochet Creatures) shows how to make upsize amigurumi, or stuffed crochet creatures typically small enough to fit in one’s palm. Beginners will appreciate the overview of recommended tools and materials (tapestry needles, “super bulky weight yarn,” and 7mm and 13mm crochet hooks) and the illustrations of crochet basics, including how to make slip knots, chain stitches, and x stitches. The darling projects include extinct (dinosaur), rare (red panda, narwhal), and commonplace (fox, French bulldog) animals, each around a foot in length or height and designed with big eyes and tiny noses. Several of the animals sport crocheted accessories: the flamingo wears a crown, the elephant holds a flower in its trunk, and the sloth wears a bow tie. Bergstrom encourages readers to put their own flair on the designs, suggesting readers might create smaller versions of the animals by using thinner yarn, use buttons or embroidery for eyes, or adorn the creatures with a bow or ribbon. The instructions are thorough and the projects are irresistible. This charms.

Twelve jumbo-sized amigurumi animals are showcased in this book by crochet designer and artist Bergstrom (101 Super Cute Things To Draw). Most amigurumi pattern books are written for a medium (worsted) weight yarn. In order to guarantee maximum huggability, however, Bergstrom designed these patterns specifically for super bulky yarn, which guarantees larger and more cuddly results. But all the patterns can be made with worsted-weight yarn if the crocheter wants a smaller outcome. The patterns range from aquatic animals (platypus, narwhal) to pets and those mostly seen in a zoo (lion, elephant). The patterns are nicely laid out and easy to follow; photographs and Bergstrom's whimsical drawings accompany every project. Outside of the flamingo, sloth, llama, and octopus, the other eight patterns share a similar body structure and design, making this book perfect for amigurumi beginners. Experienced crocheters will appreciate that many of the appendages are crocheted directly onto the body and require minimal sewing. VERDICT Bergstrom has a strong Instagram presence, so her fans will be asking for this cute book. A good addition to any crochet collection.--Lynnanne Pearson
