Find new value, purpose, and joy as you restore and uncover beauty in your home and (most importantly) in your life.

The only thing more beautiful than home transformation is personal transformation. In White & Faded Janet Parrella-Van Den Berg takes you on a hope-filled journey to discover the hidden beauty in your own home and heart.

We've all experienced it at some time, like an old piece of furniture we have felt unloved, discarded, neglected, or valueless. We've struggled with our own self-worth in moments of darkness when we feel like nobody cares about us and nobody wants us. But in these moments of despair sometimes the beginning of a journey toward hope can come from unlikely sources...like uncovering the charm and elegance of an antique chair or dresser that has had its true worth obscured by years of disuse and realizing that like that antique we still have beauty and life within ourselves.

In White & Faded, Janet Parrella-Van Den Berg takes you on a stunning photographic tour through her restored English homes as she invites you into her personal journey of restoring her own sense of value and purpose—and reveals how you can do the same. So, what is White & Faded? As Janet explains, she loves white things as a culmination of all colors and a representation of new mercies. And she loves faded things, such as cast-aside furniture, as a reminder that even what is painful, or imperfect can be repurposed to reveal hidden beauty.

Throughout this gorgeous and inspiring book, Janet gives you insights into both the literal and metaphorical aspects of white and faded as she draws on her decades of experience to offer you:

  • Fun inspiration—from antique to modern—ideal for fans of HGTV and Magnolia Network

This scattered debut by interior designer Parrella-Van Den Berg blends memoir with guidance on home décor, describing how she got through a messy divorce and showcasing “white, light, and elegant antique interiors” she has designed. The author recounts how as a teenager she “rebelled” against the dark hues of her parents’ antiques by painting vintage items in her room white, sparking an enduring passion for restoring old pieces that “display the love, pain, and rejection we all have experienced.” After her marriage ended, Parrella-Van Den Berg felt as “damaged” as a weathered antique until she found her new husband, who encouraged her to “live unashamed of all my chips and scars.” Other metaphors are more belabored, as when she suggests that the vintage corsets she collected were intended to impose on women’s figures a uniformity that should be avoided when designing living spaces. The photos of monochromatic white interiors come across as sterile and clinical, and the practical guidance underwhelms, offering such commonsensical recommendations as “allot enough time to complete” restoration projects and use flowers to brighten a space. Burdened by clichés (“You are born for desire and to be desired”), this falls flat.

Restorative designer Parrella-Van Den Berg (cofounder, White & Faded) delivers precisely what the title promises. This book takes readers on a journey devoted to a love of varied shades of white, numerous antiques, and a lifestyle surrounded by them. The book contains detailed photographs of the author's home and thoughtfully placed, white-painted antiques. There are tips on restoration, buying, and home maintenance, including how to have and protect white floors when there are pets or children living in the home. While interior design is the dominant focus, the book also interweaves therapeutic themes of self-healing that correspond with embracing the imperfections of objects. Because of its ability to expose every detail, the color white is a perfect way to discuss the vulnerability of being human. VERDICT The author cleverly explores the restoration of the home and the spirit, making this a unique title in the interior design genre. Antique lovers, photographers, and those who repurpose home goods will want to check this out.--Elizabeth Chandler
