      Bonnets at Dawn podcasters Chapman and Burke have compiled a list of eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century women writers who have changed the course of English and American literary history. They examine 18 authors total, ranging from novelists such as Jane Austen and Charlotte Bront�--the reason they started their podcast--to journalists such as Sui Sin Far (aka Edith Maude Eaton) and poets like Alice Dunbar Nelson. Each chapter starts with a theme and then introduces three relevant writers. The chapters then branch out, examining those three women individually. Illustrations follow a page of text that briefly describes their accomplishments, obstacles, idiosyncrasies, and impact. Bales' straightforward, cartoon-strip panels reimagine a day in the lives of these authors--some based on pivotal moments in their careers, some commonplace occurrences. One of the strongest elements of her artwork is how she depicts these women as both varied and ordinary--looking. Literature aficionados won't find much new information here, but this is a great choice for people who want to quickly learn more about influential women writers.
