In this news-breaking narrative, decades of women who brought down sexual predator Larry Nassar offer groundbreaking new insight, with the first known survivor and many others sharing their stories exclusively for the first time.
We think of Larry Nassar as the despicable sexual predator of Olympic gymnasts — but there is an astonishing, untold story. For decades, in a small-town gym in Michigan, he honed his manipulations on generations of aspiring gymnasts. Kids from the neighborhood. Girls with hopes of a college scholarship. Athletes and parents with a dream. In The Girls, these brave women for the first time describe Nassar's increasingly bold predations through the years, recount their warning calls unheeded, and demonstrate their resiliency in the face of a nightmare.
The Girls is a profound exploration of trust, ambition, betrayal, and self-discovery. Award-winning journalist Abigail Pesta unveils this deeply reported narrative at a time when the nation is wrestling with the implications of the MeToo movement. How do the women who grew up with Nassar reconcile the monster in the news with the man they once trusted? In The Girls, we learn that their answers to that wrenching question are as rich, insightful, and varied as the human experience itself.

Narrator Elisabeth Rodgers delivers a serious and emotional account of the events surrounding convicted child molester Dr. Larry Nassar. Rodgers details author Abigail Pesta's thorough reporting about the specific instances of abuse that Nassar inflicted on dozens of female gymnasts. Rodgers tells the stories of those survivors appropriately, letting the gravity of Nassar's actions speak for itself. In particular, her portrayal of the presiding judge during the emotional victim-impact statements is especially strong. Pesta's work honors the survivors, and Rodgers's narration reflects that respect. M.B. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine

What most people will remember from the Larry Nassar trial and sentencing is the image of hundreds of women who bravely spoke to the man who sexually abused them. These women finally had the opportunity to voice their truths and, as a result, inspired other survivors of sexual violence. Award-winning journalist Pesta (coauthor, How Dare the Sun Rise) investigates not only Nassar himself but also the culture and organizations that were negligent and allowed the abuse to continue. In interviewing a range of survivors, Pesta shares stories from some who have never before spoken publicly about their abuse. The result is a powerful work that shows how many different people and organizations failed these women. VERDICT While the book is difficult to read at times owing to the details of sexual violence, it may be the most important sports title of the year. Pesta's in-depth reporting reveals the entire scope of Nassar's history, and the many who enabled his behavior. Highly recommended.--Pamela Calfo, Baldwin Borough P.L., PA
