In Alexandra Vasti's newest Regency rom-com, a reclusive earl's life is turned upside down when a stranger shows up on his doorstep with an astonishing proposal—and an inconvenient connection to espionage.

For three years, wallflower heiress Lydia Hope-Wallace has anonymously penned seditious pamphlets. And for almost as long, she's corresponded with the Earl of Strathrannoch, whose political ambition is matched only by his charm. When Arthur's latest letter reveals his dire financial straits, Lydia sets out for Scotland to offer him the only salvation she can think of—a marriage of convenience. To, um, herself.

Unfortunately, the Earl of Strathrannoch has no idea who she is.

When a bewitching redheaded stranger offers him her hand in marriage, Arthur Baird is stunned—but when he learns that his traitorous brother has been writing to her under Arthur's name, he's bloody furious. He's content to live alone in his moldering castle, and he has no desire for a provocative, radical wife. (Or at least, he shouldn't.)

But Arthur is desperate to track down his brother, who's become dangerously entangled in British espionage, and he needs Lydia's help. What he doesn't need? The attraction that burns hotter each moment they spend together. As Lydia slips past his defenses and his brother's mysterious past becomes a very present threat, Arthur will have to risk everything to keep her safe—even his heart.

Vasti follows Ne’er Duke Well with another fiery and delightful Regency. Lydia Hope-Wallace, a writer of radical political pamphlets, shows up on the earl of Strathrannoch’s doorstep in Scotland after three years of pleasant and enriching correspondence to propose a marriage of convenience. Unfortunately, the earl, Arthur, has no idea who she is. It turns out Lydia was corresponding with Arthur’s flighty younger brother, Davis, who has absconded with a rifle scope prototype that Arthur invented. Arthur fears the prototype will be put to nefarious purposes, and Lydia agrees to help him find Davis, though their ferocious attraction to one another makes their search more complicated. Serious subjects, like the Highland Clearances and a potential political assassination, lurk in the background, but much of the foreground action has the feel of a caper, rife with lighthearted misunderstandings and clever set pieces. Meanwhile, when Lydia and Arthur finally give into their intense attraction, showers of sparks fly. This is a winner. Agent: Jessica Alvarez, BookEnds Literary.

After spending seven unbearable marriage seasons being practically invisible, Lydia finally feels seen. In her letters with the Earl of Strathrannoch, they've bonded over political and personal strife, and only he knows her heart. When the earl confesses that he's been struggling to keep his estate afloat, Lydia, as the third-richest heiress in London, sees a solution to both their problems and sets off for Scotland to propose to him. Unfortunately, she arrives to find that Strathrannoch has no knowledge of their exchange and no inclination to marry; he suspects his troublesome brother may have been impersonating him via letter. The earl and Lydia set off to find his brother, inadvertently becoming entangled in a web of espionage. Vasti (Ne'er Duke Well) crafts a complex, character-driven historical romance. With her lyrical, lilting voice, narrator Mhairi Morrison gives an emotive performance of this exciting and uplifting story. Her spirited delivery of this intricate plot yields an engaging listening experience. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a fun, fast-paced Regency romance full of spies and secrets. Recommended for fans of Julia Quinn, Grace Burrowes, and Sabrina Jeffries.--Lauren Hackert
