SETS UP GLOBAL CENTRE FOR TRADITIONAL MEDICINE • The launch of WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) at Jamnagar, which will be the world's largest centre for development of traditional medicine systems, is a reward for the continuous efforts of Government of India and Government of Gujarat that have promoted the use of traditional medicines, especially Ayurveda. The primary objective of the centre is to promote use of traditional medicines across the world. At the heart of this WHO centre will be modern science and cutting-edge technologies, which will be employed in research and development (R&D) of traditional medicines.

THE POWER PARADOX • It wasn’t just the unusually high demand for electricity this summer that caused a crisis in the country. Eqaually to blame were poor planning, bad economics and policy failures by the key stakeholders in the sector—the distribution companies (discoms) supplying power to the consumers, the power generation companies (gencos) producing it, Coal India, which supplies coal for thermal generation, and Indian Railways, which transports coal to the various plants.
