Havens of the Heart • Our summer focus for the Victoria Classics Book Club, Beatrix Potter, found inspiration in England’s Lake District, where she lived for thirty years. “I remember every stone, every tree, the scent of heather,” the beloved author and illustrator reminisced. “Even when the thunder growled in the distance, and the wind swept up the valley in fitful gusts, oh, it was beautiful, home sweet home.” Here, readers reflect on locations that hold their dearest memories.

My Mother’s Islands

Capturing Summer • Making and selling hand-tied bouquets was one of the early stepping-stones that helped us grow our little backyard cutting garden into a full-fledged flower farm.

From the Sky Above: Heaven-Sent Treasures • Silhouetted against an azure expanse, the golden sun ushers us into jubilant summer. Our assemblage of blue-and-white belongings, as calming as the drifting clouds, finds a similar complement in cheery sunflower accents.

Set Sail for Newport • Skimming along the coast in a sailboat, sipping tea in a flower-filled courtyard, seeing magnificent homes where some of America’s most prominent families spent their summers—Newport, Rhode Island, offers an endless cache of easy, breezy activities.

Alfresco Afternoon • Extending like a carpet of soft green grass, the opportunity to share unhurried hours outdoors in pleasant company fills the heart with joy. An invitation to picnic promises true refreshment for body and spirit.

Vibrant Life, Visionary Surrounds • In the quaint town of Sundborn, Sweden, an artist’s legacy lives on in the characterful abode he and his wife created together, each room and piece of furniture situated exactly as they left it.

A Return to Grace • An old plantation house in need of attention caught the eye of two history buffs who were simply looking for a weekend retreat, but they soon found the allure of small-town life impossible to resist.

A Country Cadence • The summer sun rises to a crescendo of birdsong as a playful breeze frolics across the fields, dipping its toes in the morning dew. A new day is dawning, and the whole of nature joins in the celebration.

Breezy Seaside Style • Long before boyfriend shirts were in vogue, two siblings created a line of clothing that puts a feminine spin on traditional menswear. From button-down shirts to gingham-check skirts with sassy ruffles, Claridge + King’s sisters-meet-misters style is perfect for every season.

A Nova Scotia Paradise • The town of Annapolis Royal is infused with millennia of history. The treasured tales of each era are displayed in the carefully crafted sections of its Historic Gardens, which are woven together with vibrant, fragrant botanical beauty.

Wares of Whimsy • Stepping into this three-shop storefront in one of America’s most beloved metropolises is like walking into an Old-World wonderland. Featured products are composed by owner and designer John Derian, who uses antique prints as inspiration and even as découpage material in their creation.

Stitched in Tradition • Precise stitches weave in and out of linen fabric, forming geometrical designs that centuries of seamstresses have applied to a variety of traditional items,...
