TALES OF THE GREAT RECESSION

CONTRIBUTORS

COLD COMFORT • A night at Québec’s Hôtel de Glace, built entirely of ice

AMERICANS SHOULD NOT FEAR THE MEDIA • Fearing exploitation, many refuse to talk to reporters, but it’s important for ordinary folks to participate in the news

LIVING SCULPTURES: AIR PLANTS • Brighten your home with a creative and easy-care array of air plants – no soil required. Popular Tillandsia varieties from online and retail garden stores include 1) ionanthas (aka sky plants), with pointed leaves that grow out the top and sides; 2) caput-medusae, with snake-like leaves and red or blue flowers; and 3) andreanas, with leaves that shoot out from all sides and tubular flowers that bloom from the plant’s center. Displaying them is simple: PLANT: Tuck into clear holders from craft or garden stores. PLACE: Hang in bright but filtered sunlight from an east- or west-facing window. DUNK: Daily misting isn’t enough. Experts recommend submerging plants in bottled drinking water for 12 hours every 10 to 14 days. (Air plants absorb only what they need and won’t drown.) After removing the plant from water, gently shake it upside down and return it to its container.
