Kindly Gestures • With a new calendar stretching before us—its entries as pristine as drifts of new-fallen snow—readers share hopes for filling the days to come with acts of thoughtfulness. Their ideas for demonstrating courtesy, showing empathy, and fostering connection encourage us to make 2020 a year characterized by compassion and graciousness.

Drifting Thoughts

A Nod to Grace • As some of the very first perennials to bloom in my cut-flower garden, hellebores are always a joyful sight—a sure sign that spring is on the way.

Island Treasures • The ocean retains its allure in winter, when hushed serenity replaces tourism’s bustle. Our cache of gifts, inspired by soft coastal tones, is as dreamy as the mythical city of Atlantis.

The Soul of a Home of a HOME • For a Midwest blogger-turned-designer, an internship in Boston instilled an abiding affinity for the signature styles of New England, especially the sun-bleached cottages nestled along the sand dune–lined shores of Nantucket.

In the Stillness of Winter of WINTER • Reflected in the crystallized surface of an icy pond, birches point toward the sunrise, a reminder that the garden’s verdure is merely sleeping beneath winter’s blanket. This season holds immense beauty for the many garden rooms at Morton Hall, each of which is set like a stage awaiting its players.

Moments of Solitude • Beyond the frost-etched windowpanes, flakes fall silently into snowy drifts. While waiting for the first eager...
