Knock Knock. Who’s There? [No Answer.] • HOW YOUR ENGINE CONSTANTLY INVITES AND SILENCES ENGINE KNOCK TO ESTIMATE A FUEL’S OCTANE RATING.

Lion on Our Streets • AFTER A NEARLY 30-YEAR SLUMBER, PEUGEOT AIMS TO CLAW ITS WAY BACK TO AMERICA.

Le Bon Lion • Peugeot officially came to the U.S. in 1958, but its history predates the invention of the car. Peugeot lacked the oddness of French rival Citroën and declined throughout the ’80s as the 505—by mid-decade, the company’s sole offering here—aged into irrelevance. In 1986, Peugeot sold 14,300 cars, and that fell to just 4200 in 1990 despite the launch of the competitive 405 sedan in August 1988. The French waved the white flag in 1991; few outside its 151 dealers noticed it was gone.

2018 HONDA ACCORD EX-L • Long-Term Test: When the tires get worn and the factory warranty runs out, that’s where we come in. Car and Driver is your source for the 40,000-mile evaluation.

IN LOGBOOK VERITAS

Fleet Files: • Here’s how our other longterm vehicles are faring in their 40,000-mile trials:

Safe Bet • As competition among electric vehicles intensifies, Mercedes-Benz antes up with the EQC400.

Don’t Tread on Me • Jag’s XE SV Project 8 blurs the line between supercars and sedans.

Meet the Real Ford Edge • Stickier rubber and smarter aero sharpen Ford’s latest Mustang Shelby GT350.

Mehnificent • The all-new, 2020 Toyota Corolla XSE sedan might not look like the anonymous appliance of old, but its predecessor’s spirit lives on.

Starving Artist • The Arteon is a gorgeous car that few Americans will buy.

One Last Gasp • The 911 Speedster is the 991.2’s last hurrah. An improved engine, sublime ride, and manual transmission make for a hell of a way to say goodbye.

Coming of Age • Mercedes-Benz’s new-for-2020 CLA250 finally realizes its full potential.

What I’d Do Differently David Brabham, 53 • Jack Brabham’s son tells us about arguing with his famous father, winning Le Mans on the 16th attempt, and starting his own car company.
