THE PROBLEM WITH THE PLATFORMS • Giant tech companies love founders. Until they start getting too successful.

Pittsburgh • Biotech, self-driving cars, and robotics? The Steel Belt city is the best-kept secret east of Silicon Valley.

The Campus Jocks Who Practice on Mom’s Couch

The Jargonator • Swatting the buzzwords of business since 2014.

The Pros and the Cons of Net Neutrality • Ever felt the internet needed major changes? That’s coming, but you’re going to be sorry, say advocates of net neutrality. They believe internet providers—like Verizon—should treat all web traffic equally, and are outraged by the Federal Communications Commission’s decision last December that repealed rules requiring those providers to do just that. Advocates of the FCC decision insist the market will now dictate what succeeds or fails online. We asked Zachary Sims, co-founder and CEO of the online coding boot camp Codecademy, and Eliran Sapir, founder and CEO of data mining firm Apptopia, what all this means for the future of the web.

TO CHANGE IS HVMN. TO SUCCEED IS DIVINE

Startup Slowdown? Don’t Blame the Feds • Why are there fewer startups? An exhaustive study of business dynamism from 1999 to 2013 conducted by the economists Nathan Goldschlag (of the U.S. Census Bureau) and Alex Tabarrok (a professor at George Mason University) rules out one big reason: federal regulation. “I’m very surprised,” says Tabarrok, who’s also a senior fellow at the libertarian-leaning Independent Institute. “It’s a depressing result. If it were regulation, we’d know how to fix it.” This chart tracks key industries’ expansion of locations against how stringently they’ve been regulated; three plausible theories for the ongoing entre preneurial slowdown are below.

How to Go Big—While Keeping Costs Low • In his new column and video series, Inc. columnist and legendary entrepreneur Norm Brodsky visits with founders and helps them solve challenges. Here, he and Shlomo Birnbaum, founder of Newark, New Jersey–based Single Serve Beverage Distribution—an Inc. 500 company that this year will sell 100 million pods of ground coffee that pop into coffee machines—wrestle with expansion and rising labor costs.

Rising   Stars • Nothing better illustrates the vibrancy of entrepreneurship than Inc.’s Rising Stars, the inspiring under-30 founders who are blazing paths in fields ranging from diamond-making to tech to beekeeping. Presenting the stars of the future—and today.

Mind Someone Else’s Business • Why you should join another company’s board.

Wellness Works • Promoting a healthy lifestyle in the office has proven benefits, including lower health care costs. Can’t afford free gym memberships? There are many low-cost options.

Welcoming Wellness • Two tips before you start

Partners • These guys launched Revolve, an online apparel retailer, in 2003. In ’18, they expect $1 billion in sales. How do they do it?

Why, Grandmother, What a Cool Robot You Have
